Who Was Kenia Monge & What Happened to Her? 2026 Update & Profile

Kenia Yulissa Monge was a 19-year-old woman whose disappearance and murder became one of Colorado’s most heartbreaking criminal cases. Her story drew national attention because of the long search for answers, the determination of her family, and the shocking crimes committed by the man who killed her.

More than a decade after her death, Kenia’s case continues to be remembered because it exposed the dangers posed by a repeat offender who was able to evade accountability until another victim survived a brutal attack and helped investigators connect the evidence. Her story is now the focus of ABC News’ 20/20 special Evil at the Door, which revisits the investigation and the effort to bring her killer to justice.

A New Life in America

Kenia was born on January 26, 1992, in Honduras. Her mother, Maria Lee, immigrated to the United States while Kenia remained in Honduras with relatives. Years later, Maria and her husband, Tony Lee, were able to bring Kenia to Colorado, giving her the opportunity to build a new life in America.

Family members described Kenia as energetic, outgoing, and full of ambition. She quickly adapted to life in Colorado and developed close relationships with her siblings and stepfather. After graduating from Cherry Creek High School in 2010, she pursued interests in media and entertainment and interned with Univision. Relatives said she hoped to build a career in television production and broadcasting.

The Night She Vanished

On March 31, 2011, Kenia went out with friends in downtown Denver. During the evening, she became separated from her group after being removed from the 24K Lounge because she was intoxicated. In the confusion, she left behind her purse, cellphone, and keys. Her friends did not immediately realize she was gone.

When Kenia failed to return home the following morning, alarm spread quickly among her loved ones. Her boyfriend contacted family members, and they immediately began searching for her. The fact that she had left behind her personal belongings convinced them something was seriously wrong. As the hours passed without any contact, fear turned into desperation.

The Text Message That Changed the Investigation

While reviewing Kenia’s cellphone, Tony Lee discovered a text message from a man named Travis Forbes. The message identified him as the person who had given Kenia a ride on the night she disappeared. That discovery placed Forbes at the center of the investigation almost immediately.

When questioned by police, Forbes claimed he had picked Kenia up after seeing her outside the nightclub. He said he drove her to a gas station and that she eventually left with another man. Investigators found problems with his story. The gas station was reportedly closed during the time he claimed to have stopped there, and officers noticed a strong odor of bleach coming from his van. Despite those concerns, police lacked enough evidence to charge him.

What Happened to Kenia Monge?

Months after Kenia disappeared, investigators learned the truth through a combination of forensic evidence, surveillance footage, and a confession from Travis Forbes.

According to prosecutors, Forbes offered Kenia a ride after finding her alone outside the nightclub. After dropping off a friend who had been riding with them, he drove Kenia away in his van. Forbes later admitted that when she lost consciousness, he sexually assaulted her. When she regained consciousness and fought back, he strangled her to death.

Investigators later uncovered surveillance footage showing Forbes behaving suspiciously at a bakery he rented for his business. Cameras recorded him transporting a large cooler into the building and handling bleach shortly after Kenia disappeared. Authorities believed he used the cooler and freezer to conceal evidence before disposing of her body.

The Breakthrough That Solved the Case

For months, investigators suspected Forbes but could not prove he had killed Kenia. The breakthrough came after another woman, Lydia Tillman, survived a violent attack in Fort Collins, Colorado.

In July 2011, Lydia was sexually assaulted, beaten, strangled, covered in bleach, and left inside a burning apartment. Despite catastrophic injuries, she escaped and survived. DNA evidence recovered from her attack matched Travis Forbes, giving authorities the evidence they needed to arrest him.

Faced with overwhelming evidence, Forbes confessed to murdering Kenia. He then led investigators to a shallow grave in Weld County near Interstate 76. On September 7, 2011, authorities recovered Kenia’s remains more than five months after she vanished. The discovery finally ended the uncertainty her family had endured since April.

Justice for Kenia

On September 26, 2011, Travis Forbes pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. In exchange for his confession and cooperation, prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty. He received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Forbes also pleaded guilty to charges connected to the attack on Lydia Tillman. He received an additional 48-year prison sentence to be served consecutively to his life sentence. Today, he remains incarcerated in Colorado and will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Remembering Kenia Monge

Kenia’s family spent months searching for answers and refused to stop looking for her even when leads disappeared and the investigation stalled. Their persistence kept attention focused on the case and helped ensure that investigators continued pursuing every possible lead.

Today, Kenia is remembered as a young woman with dreams, ambitions, and a future that was taken from her. Her murder remains one of Colorado’s most notorious criminal cases, while the survival of Lydia Tillman and the determination of investigators ultimately ensured that the man responsible would never be free again.
