A Beloved Mother Disappears

Joleen Cummings, a 34-year-old mother of three from Nassau County, Florida, was last seen on May 12, 2018. That afternoon, she closed her shift at Tangles Hair Salon in Fernandina Beach and never made it home. She failed to pick up her children the next day, which raised immediate concern from her family. Her disappearance was especially alarming given her reputation as a devoted mother. According to friends, Joleen was deeply committed to her children and would never have left them behind willingly.

As detectives began their investigation, they quickly turned their attention to her workplace. Joleen’s last known interaction was with her co-worker Jennifer Sybert. When Sybert refused to speak with authorities and quit her job abruptly, it raised suspicions. The evasive behavior was just the beginning of what investigators would uncover about Sybert’s true identity and connection to Joleen’s presumed death.

The Discovery of a False Identity

Jennifer Sybert was not who she claimed to be. Within days, investigators learned that the name belonged to a girl who had died decades earlier in Pennsylvania. In reality, the woman working at Tangles Hair Salon was Kimberly Kessler, a fugitive who had been missing since 2004 and living under stolen identities. She had crisscrossed the country for over two decades, moving from state to state, leaving behind fragments of fabricated lives.

Kessler’s arrest came after security footage placed her behind the wheel of Joleen’s abandoned vehicle. Additional footage showed her dumping large garbage bags into a salon dumpster and later purchasing an electric carving knife, gloves, and cleaning products at Walmart. She was eventually found sleeping in her car at a rest stop and was taken into custody. Authorities immediately charged her with grand theft auto, which soon escalated into a homicide investigation.

A Crime Scene Without a Body

When investigators returned to Tangles Hair Salon, they processed the space with Luminol and discovered extensive blood evidence. The salon, according to detectives, lit up with blood residue on walls, cabinets, sinks, and salon chairs. DNA confirmed it belonged to Joleen Cummings. The amount of blood suggested a violent attack had occurred in the salon, strengthening the theory that Joleen had been killed and dismembered on-site.

Despite an intensive search effort that included landfills and wooded areas, Joleen’s body was never found. But investigators uncovered more damning evidence: Joleen’s blood was also found on a pair of boots, socks, and a pair of salon scissors in Kessler’s possession. Surveillance footage revealed Kessler making multiple trips to the salon’s dumpster with large bags. One day before the murder, witnesses said Joleen had confronted Kessler about her identity, suggesting she had figured out the lie.

The Descent Into Madness

Kimberly Kessler’s behavior after her arrest only deepened the case’s infamy. While awaiting trial, she staged multiple outbursts and engaged in bizarre conduct in jail, including self-starvation and smearing feces in her cell. At one point, her weight dropped from 196 to 74 pounds. She refused to appear in court, sometimes opting to sit in a separate room connected via video. Her defense attempted to declare her incompetent for trial, but after several evaluations, the court ruled she was mentally fit to stand trial.

Even with these disruptions, the evidence against her was overwhelming. Investigators had constructed a timeline using surveillance footage, receipts, and forensic results. Kessler’s past revealed disturbing patterns, including an earlier incident where she stabbed a boyfriend with scissors. Her aliases had allowed her to evade accountability for years, but her final identity would be tied to a brutal murder in a quiet beach town.

Trial, Conviction, and Life Without Parole

In December 2021, a jury found Kimberly Kessler guilty of first-degree murder. Judge James Daniel sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During sentencing, he remarked that even if the sentence hadn’t been mandatory, it still would have been warranted given the nature of the crime. Kessler never showed remorse, never confessed, and never explained what truly happened to Joleen’s body.

The trial brought little closure to Joleen’s family, who still hold out hope that her remains might one day be found. For the community of Fernandina Beach, the loss remains raw. A mother was taken from her children, and a salon once full of life became the scene of unthinkable violence.
