Who Is Brian Winchester & Where Is He Now? 2026 Update & Profile

For nearly 17 years, Brian Winchester carried a secret that could explain one of Florida’s most baffling disappearances.
He knew why Jerry Michael “Mike” Williams had never surfaced after supposedly falling from his boat during a duck hunt at Lake Seminole.
He knew why searchers had never found a body.
He knew why the theory that alligators had consumed Mike’s remains was wrong.
Brian knew because he was the man who killed him.
Mike had been one of Winchester’s close friends. Their families socialized together. They hunted together. Winchester even worked in insurance and was involved in arranging life-insurance coverage on Mike.
But Winchester was also having an affair with Mike’s wife, Denise Williams.
According to Winchester’s eventual confession and testimony, he and Denise discussed ways Mike could be removed from their lives. On December 16, 2000, Winchester took Mike onto Lake Seminole and attempted to make his death look like a hunting accident.
When the plan failed, Winchester shot him.
He then hid Mike’s body and maintained the secret for more than 16 years.
Today, Brian Winchester remains in a Florida prison, serving a 20-year sentence — but not for murdering Mike Williams. He is serving that sentence for the later armed kidnapping of Denise, the crime that ultimately caused the murder conspiracy to unravel. Recent reporting places him at Madison Correctional Institution in Madison, Florida.

Who Is Brian Winchester?
Brian Winchester grew up within the same Tallahassee-area social circle as Mike and Denise Williams.
Brian was married to Kathy Thomas Winchester, while Mike was married to his high-school sweetheart, Denise.
The couples were friends.
Mike and Brian hunted together and spent considerable time around one another. The Florida appellate court described Mike, Brian and their spouses as longtime friends who regularly socialized together.
Behind those friendships, however, Brian and Denise developed another relationship.
According to the court record, their friendship became a romantic relationship in 1997.
The affair continued while both were married.
Eventually, Brian testified, he and Denise began discussing how they could be together permanently.
Mike stood in the way.
Brian and Denise Discuss Killing Mike
Winchester’s eventual testimony became the foundation of the prosecution’s account of the conspiracy.
He said he and Denise considered different ways Mike might be killed.
One idea involved staging a robbery at Mike’s office. That plan and others were discarded before they settled on a scenario involving one of Mike’s familiar activities: hunting.
Winchester later described the planning between himself and Denise as “very mutual,” although he acknowledged that he had instigated much of it.
The eventual idea was chillingly simple.
Mike’s death would look like an accident.
And Winchester was in a unique position to make that happen because Mike trusted him.
The Life Insurance Connection
There was another connection between Winchester and Mike that later attracted investigators’ attention.
Winchester worked in insurance.
He had been involved in selling life-insurance coverage on Mike before Mike disappeared.
The insurance policies ultimately became part of the prosecution’s account of the case, although the evidence surrounding them has to be distinguished from proof of the killing itself.
After Mike was legally declared dead, Denise collected substantial insurance proceeds.
But in 2000, investigators did not know that Mike had been murdered.
They were looking for a missing hunter.
December 16, 2000
Early on December 16, Brian and Mike met to go duck hunting at Lake Seminole.
It was not unusual for the two men to hunt together.
But, according to the Florida appellate court’s summary of the evidence, this time Brian intended to murder his friend.
The plan depended on making Mike’s death look accidental.
Winchester later testified that he got Mike into his waders and pushed him into the water.
He expected Mike to drown.
Instead, Mike survived.
The Murder Plan Goes Wrong
Mike managed to reach a stump in the lake.
That presented Winchester with an immediate problem.
If Mike escaped from the water, he could tell people that his supposed friend had just tried to kill him.
The staged drowning was over.
Winchester subsequently admitted that he shot Mike.
The gunshot also destroyed the possibility of simply leaving Mike’s body in Lake Seminole. If searchers recovered a man with an obvious gunshot wound, authorities would know immediately that they were dealing with murder rather than a boating accident.
Winchester therefore had to make Mike disappear.
Brian Hides His Friend’s Body
Winchester removed Mike’s body from the lake.
He eventually buried Mike in a remote area outside Tallahassee.
Then he returned to his normal life.
The deception worked extraordinarily well.
Authorities found Mike’s vehicle.
His boat was recovered.
But there was no body.
Search efforts concentrated on Lake Seminole because everything had been arranged to suggest that was where Mike had disappeared.
As time passed, the theory developed that Mike had drowned and his body might have been consumed by alligators.
Winchester knew otherwise.
Mike wasn’t in the lake.
For Years, Brian Says Nothing
The secret survived.
Mike’s mother, Cheryl Williams, repeatedly challenged the accidental-drowning explanation and pushed authorities to continue investigating.
But without a body, a crime scene or a confession, proving homicide was enormously difficult.
Meanwhile, Brian’s personal life began changing.
He separated from Kathy roughly a year after Mike’s death, according to the appellate record, and their divorce was completed in 2003.
Two years later, in 2005, Brian married Denise.
Mike’s close friend was now married to Mike’s widow.
The relationship at the center of the secret had finally become public.
Brian and Denise’s Marriage Begins to Collapse
The marriage did not last.
Brian and Denise eventually separated after approximately seven years together, and Denise filed for divorce in 2015.
The breakup apparently terrified Winchester.
During the divorce proceedings, according to the appellate court, police told Brian that Denise planned to reveal what had happened to Mike after the divorce was completed.
Whether Denise actually intended to do that was a separate question.
What matters to what happened next is that Winchester believed the secret might finally come out.
His reaction ultimately destroyed the conspiracy’s long silence.
Brian Kidnaps Denise at Gunpoint
In August 2016, Winchester broke into Denise’s vehicle and waited for her.
When Denise entered the vehicle to drive to work, Brian was hiding inside.
He was armed.
According to the court record, Denise eventually persuaded him to release her and then contacted authorities.
Winchester was arrested for armed kidnapping.
This time he faced the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison.
He was also accused of attempting to tamper with witnesses in the kidnapping prosecution.
And suddenly, investigators had enormous leverage over one of the people they suspected knew what had happened to Mike.
Brian Makes a Deal
While Winchester was jailed on the kidnapping charge, he entered into a proffer agreement with prosecutors.
The arrangement would become one of the most controversial aspects of the Williams case.
In exchange for Winchester’s cooperation in locating Mike’s body and truthfully explaining what had happened, the State agreed not to recommend a life sentence in the kidnapping case and not to raise the alleged witness tampering at sentencing.
Most significantly, the State agreed that Winchester’s truthful testimony would not be used against him in future proceedings.
The State nevertheless sought a 45-year sentence for the kidnapping.
The court ultimately imposed 20 years in prison followed by 15 years of probation.
And Winchester finally began revealing the secret he had carried since 2000.
Brian Leads Investigators to Mike
Winchester told investigators where Mike had been buried.
Authorities searched the location in 2017 and recovered Mike’s remains.
After nearly 17 years, the mystery of the missing body was over.
Mike had never vanished beneath Lake Seminole.
The lake had been part of the staging.
Winchester’s confession provided investigators with something they had never previously possessed: an account from the killer himself explaining the attempted drowning, shooting and disposal of Mike’s body.
It also gave prosecutors a witness against Denise.
Brian Becomes the Star Witness
Denise Williams was arrested in 2018.
At her trial later that year, Winchester became the prosecution’s central witness.
He described the affair.
He described discussions about killing Mike.
He described the hunting trip.
And he admitted killing his friend.
His credibility was an obvious issue for the defense because Winchester had received substantial legal protection for cooperating.
Nevertheless, the jury convicted Denise of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
She initially received a life sentence for murder and a 30-year sentence for conspiracy.
Her murder conviction was later overturned.
The First District Court of Appeal found insufficient evidence to establish that Denise was legally a principal to Winchester’s completed murder. But the court found sufficient evidence that Denise and Winchester had agreed to kill Mike and upheld her conspiracy conviction.
Why Wasn’t Brian Winchester Convicted of Mike’s Murder?
This is perhaps the most surprising question in the entire case.
Brian admitted killing Mike, but he is not serving a murder sentence for killing him.
The explanation lies in his cooperation agreement.
When Winchester agreed to tell authorities what happened and help them recover Mike’s body, prosecutors agreed not to use his truthful testimony against him in future proceedings. The arrangement gave investigators the evidence necessary to solve a homicide that had remained hidden for almost 17 years.
Without Winchester, investigators might never have located Mike’s remains.
But the deal also meant that the admitted killer became the cooperating witness rather than the defendant prosecuted for Mike’s murder.
His prison sentence instead came from what he did to Denise in 2016.
Where Is Brian Winchester Now?
Brian Winchester is currently serving his 20-year kidnapping sentence in the Florida prison system.
Recent reporting places him at Madison Correctional Institution in Madison, Florida. ABC News also reports that Winchester remains imprisoned under the 20-year sentence for kidnapping Denise.
A current third-party inmate listing gives Winchester’s projected release date as July 30, 2036 and likewise lists Madison Correctional Institution as his facility.
Because I have not independently confirmed that projected date through a current Florida Department of Corrections inmate record, it is safest to describe July 2036 as the presently reported projected release date, rather than an unconditional release date.
And leaving prison would not necessarily conclude his sentence.
The judgment documented by Florida’s appellate court imposed 15 years of probation after his 20-year prison term.
Brian’s Sentence Creates an Extraordinary Legal Outcome
The final legal positions of Brian and Denise are unusual.
Brian admitted physically killing Mike.
He is serving 20 years for kidnapping Denise.
Denise did not physically kill Mike.
She is serving 30 years for conspiring with Brian to kill him after her separate murder conviction was reversed.
Consequently, neither Brian nor Denise is currently serving a sentence arising from a surviving conviction for the completed murder of Mike Williams itself.
ABC News reported the same unusual outcome: Brian is serving his kidnapping sentence while Denise remains imprisoned on the conspiracy conviction.
The Friend Who Knew Everything
Brian Winchester occupies a unique position in the story of Mike Williams.
He was Mike’s friend.
He was Denise’s lover.
He became Denise’s husband.
He became her kidnapper.
And eventually, he became the witness whose confession solved Mike’s disappearance.
For almost 17 years, investigators searched for an explanation of how an experienced hunter could vanish from Lake Seminole without leaving a body.
Winchester knew the answer the entire time.
There was no mysterious drowning.
There was no body hidden somewhere beneath the lake.
There was no alligator attack that erased the evidence.
Mike Williams disappeared because the friend he trusted had taken him hunting with the intention of killing him, attempted to drown him, shot him when that failed and buried his body somewhere searchers would never think to look.
The crime that ultimately exposed that secret wasn’t Mike’s murder.
It was Winchester’s inability to let Denise leave him more than 15 years later.
That armed kidnapping put Brian Winchester in prison.
And it finally gave investigators the opening they needed to learn what happened to Mike Williams.
