The crimes committed by Kelly Cochran remain among the most disturbing murder cases in recent American history. Once living an ordinary life in Michigan and later Indiana with her husband, Jason Cochran, she became the focus of a multi-state homicide investigation that uncovered the killing of her lover, the murder of her husband and allegations of a deadly marriage pact that shocked investigators.
ABC’s 20/20 revisits the case in Where Monsters Hide, exploring how a missing person’s investigation developed into one of the Midwest’s most notorious murder cases. Years after her convictions, Kelly Cochran remains behind bars serving multiple sentences, while questions surrounding her life and the possibility of additional victims continue to attract attention from true crime audiences.

Who Is Kelly Cochran?
Kelly Cochran grew up in Michigan before later moving with her husband, Jason Cochran, to Iron River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Friends and neighbours described the couple as appearing relatively ordinary from the outside, although investigators later uncovered evidence suggesting their marriage was far more complicated than anyone realised.
Kelly worked in the local community, where she met Christopher “Chris” Regan, a mechanic who eventually became romantically involved with her. That relationship would later become the centrepiece of one of the prosecution’s most important theories.
During the investigation, detectives learned of an alleged agreement between Kelly and Jason that prosecutors described as a “murder pact.” According to testimony presented in court, the couple had agreed that if either spouse had an affair, the other person involved would be killed. Investigators concluded that Chris Regan became the first victim of that arrangement.
The alleged pact became one of the most unusual elements of the case and helped explain what initially appeared to be an inexplicable disappearance.
The Murder of Christopher Regan
Chris Regan disappeared in October 2014 after suddenly stopping contact with friends and family. He failed to report to work and left behind none of the signs normally associated with someone choosing to disappear voluntarily.
For many months, investigators searched for answers while interviewing dozens of witnesses and examining Regan’s personal life. As evidence accumulated, suspicion increasingly focused on Kelly and Jason Cochran.
Michigan prosecutors later alleged that Kelly lured Regan to the couple’s home in Iron River, where Jason shot him. Prosecutors said Kelly then helped dismember the body before the remains were transported to a remote wooded area and concealed.
The case remained unsolved for more than a year, with investigators continuing to gather evidence while waiting for a breakthrough.
Jason Cochran’s Death Changed Everything
The investigation took an unexpected turn in February 2016 after Kelly and Jason had moved to Hobart, Indiana.
Kelly called emergency services reporting that her husband had overdosed on heroin and was no longer breathing. Detectives quickly became suspicious after inconsistencies emerged between Kelly’s account and the physical evidence.
Medical findings led investigators to conclude Jason had not died from an accidental overdose. Prosecutors alleged Kelly injected him with a lethal dose of heroin before strangling him.
Jason’s death brought detectives from Indiana and Michigan together, allowing investigators to compare evidence gathered in both states. The combined investigation eventually linked the two homicide cases.
Kelly Cochran’s Confessions
Detectives later described Kelly Cochran as one of the most intelligent and psychologically complex suspects they had interviewed. Investigators said she understood police procedures, frequently changed her version of events and attempted to shift responsibility onto others.
Former Hobart detective Jeremy Ogden and former Iron River Police Chief Laura Frizzo spent months interviewing Kelly. Investigators used a range of interview techniques while carefully comparing her statements with forensic evidence.
Eventually, Kelly admitted involvement in Chris Regan’s killing while placing much of the blame on Jason. More importantly, she agreed to lead investigators to the location where Regan’s remains had been hidden.
That discovery provided crucial evidence for prosecutors and allowed Regan’s family to recover his remains after many months of uncertainty.
The Trials and Sentences
Because the murders occurred in different states, Kelly Cochran faced two separate criminal cases.
In Michigan, she stood trial for the murder of Christopher Regan. Prosecutors argued that Kelly participated in luring Regan to the house, disposing of his body and concealing the crime. A jury convicted her of first-degree murder, and she received life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
She also faced prosecution in Indiana for the killing of Jason Cochran.
Kelly eventually pleaded guilty to murdering her husband by strangulation. In 2018, a Lake County judge sentenced her to 65 years in prison, rejecting her attempts to portray Jason as the dominant force behind the crimes.
Following sentencing, Kelly was returned to Michigan, where she continues serving her life sentence.
Where Is Kelly Cochran Now?
As of 2026, Kelly Cochran remains incarcerated in the Michigan Department of Corrections. Her sentence of life imprisonment without parole for Christopher Regan’s murder means she is not eligible for release.
Her additional 65-year Indiana sentence remains in place for Jason Cochran’s murder, although the Michigan life sentence effectively ensures she will remain imprisoned for the rest of her life.
She has filed appeals over the years, but her murder convictions remain intact. There has been no indication that she will ever be released.
Kelly has maintained a low public profile while incarcerated, with most recent public attention coming through television documentaries and true crime programmes revisiting the investigation.
Was Kelly Cochran a Serial Killer?
Although Kelly Cochran has been convicted of two murders, investigators have publicly acknowledged they examined the possibility that additional victims could exist.
During the investigation, some of Kelly’s relatives made claims that she may have been responsible for several other killings across the Midwest. Those allegations became the subject of documentaries and extensive media coverage.
Investigators also questioned Kelly about other unsolved disappearances. Former detective Jeremy Ogden has publicly stated that he asked Kelly about additional cases in hopes of obtaining information that could bring closure to other families.
Despite years of speculation, no additional murder charges have ever been filed, and authorities have not publicly confirmed evidence linking Kelly Cochran to any other homicides beyond the deaths of Christopher Regan and Jason Cochran.
Why the Case Still Draws Attention
The Kelly Cochran investigation continues to fascinate true crime audiences because of its unusual combination of circumstances. The alleged murder pact, the disappearance of Christopher Regan, the later killing of Jason Cochran and Kelly’s shifting confessions created a case unlike most homicide investigations.
Investigators have often described the psychological aspects of the case as particularly challenging. Detectives spent years separating fact from fiction while confronting a suspect they believed deliberately manipulated nearly everyone around her.
20/20’s Where Monsters Hide revisits that investigation through interviews with detectives and prosecutors who spent years building the cases against Kelly Cochran. The programme also examines the lasting impact on the families of Christopher Regan and Jason Cochran, whose lives were permanently changed by crimes that began with one missing man and uncovered a far darker story.
