Who Is Nick Firkus & Where Is He Now? 2026 Update & Profile

Nicholas “Nick” Firkus became the central figure in one of Minnesota’s most closely followed homicide cases, a story that began with a reported home invasion in 2010 and ended with a murder conviction more than a decade later. His case, revisited in ABC’s 20/20 episode Stranger in the House, traces a path from initial victim to convicted killer, shaped by inconsistencies, financial deception, and a long investigation that ultimately led to a life sentence.

Early Life, Personality, and Public Image
Nick Firkus was raised in Minnesota and came from a family with strong community ties. The son of a successful local businessman, he was often described as personable and approachable, someone who presented well in social settings and built relationships easily. Those who knew him in his younger years saw him as active, friendly, and grounded in faith.
His connection to church life played a major role in shaping his identity. It was through church volunteering that he met Heidi, and their shared religious values became a defining feature of their relationship. To friends and family, Nick appeared committed to building a stable life, guided by faith and traditional values. That public image would later stand in sharp contrast to the allegations that emerged during the investigation into Heidi’s death.
Marriage, Financial Struggles, and Hidden Pressures
After marrying Heidi, Nick settled into what appeared to be a typical newlywed life in St. Paul. The couple purchased a home and began building a future together. Outwardly, there were few signs of trouble, and those around them had little reason to suspect the extent of the financial strain behind the scenes.
Investigators later uncovered that the couple’s home had fallen into foreclosure and that they were scheduled to be evicted the day after Heidi was killed. Prosecutors argued that Nick had concealed the seriousness of their financial situation, creating a gap between reality and what Heidi understood about their circumstances. This financial pressure became central to the state’s theory, which held that Nick acted to prevent exposure of the truth.
The 2010 Shooting and the Intruder Claim
On April 25, 2010, Nick Firkus called 911 shortly after his wife placed a frantic call reporting a break-in. He told authorities that an intruder had entered the home, struggled with him over a shotgun, and fired two shots, killing Heidi and injuring him in the leg. He described the suspect as a man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and claimed the person fled the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, Nick was treated as a victim and key witness. He cooperated to a degree with investigators, provided DNA and fingerprints, and worked with a sketch artist to create an image of the alleged intruder. With no clear evidence contradicting his account at the time, the case did not lead to an arrest and eventually went cold, leaving his version of events largely unchallenged in the public eye.
A New Life and Lingering Questions
In the years following Heidi’s death, Nick moved forward with his life. Within months, he entered a new relationship with Rachel Sanchez, and the two eventually married and had children together. To those around him, it appeared that he had rebuilt his life after a traumatic event.
Despite this outward sense of normalcy, investigators continued to revisit unresolved aspects of the case. The lack of physical evidence supporting a break-in, the inconsistencies in Nick’s account, and the unexplained financial situation remained points of concern. For years, however, those questions did not result in charges, and the case remained open without a clear resolution.
The Turning Point and Arrest
The case shifted dramatically when Rachel Sanchez began to question Nick’s honesty. She later told investigators that she discovered patterns of deception, particularly involving finances, that echoed the circumstances surrounding Heidi’s death. As her concerns grew, she confronted him and recorded a conversation in which she challenged his truthfulness and raised the possibility that he had lied about the past.
This development gave investigators the break they needed. Combined with the earlier inconsistencies and evidence gathered over the years, the new information allowed authorities to build a stronger case. On May 19, 2021, Nick Firkus was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder, more than eleven years after Heidi’s death.
Trial, Conviction, and Sentence
Nick Firkus’ trial took place in 2023 and focused on whether the intruder story could be supported by evidence. Prosecutors argued that there had been no break-in and that Nick had staged the scene after killing his wife. They pointed to the absence of forced entry, the lack of unknown DNA, the condition of the home, and the financial motive as key elements of their case.
The defense maintained that his original account was accurate and that Heidi’s death resulted from a struggle with an unknown attacker. After deliberating for several hours, the jury found him guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, marking the conclusion of a case that had remained unresolved for more than a decade.
Appeal and Where Nick Firkus Is Now
Following his conviction, Nick Firkus appealed the verdict, arguing that the case relied on circumstantial evidence and did not exclude the possibility of an intruder. His legal team challenged both the interpretation of the evidence and the standards applied during the trial.
In February 2026, the Minnesota Supreme Court upheld his conviction, ruling that the evidence presented was sufficient to support the jury’s decision. That ruling left his sentence intact. Nick Firkus is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole, with his conviction affirmed at the highest level of the state’s judicial system.
