Who is Sigfredo Garcia & Where is He Now? 2026 Update & Background

Sigfredo Garcia was born and raised in South Florida, where he developed close ties with members of the Latin Kings gang and became involved in criminal activity early in life. Known in street circles as “Tuto,” Garcia had a history of arrests and a reputation for violence. His relationship with Katherine Magbanua, with whom he shared two children, brought him into the orbit of the Adelson family.

Garcia lived in Miami and worked intermittently, but lacked consistent employment. His connection to Magbanua remained strong even after their romantic relationship ended. When Magbanua began dating Charles Adelson, Garcia stayed in the picture, often involved in turbulent exchanges and co-parenting struggles. That connection would prove critical in the events that followed.

Recruitment and Role in the Murder

According to prosecutors, Garcia was recruited by Katherine Magbanua to carry out a murder-for-hire plan aimed at eliminating Florida State University law professor Dan Markel. He and fellow Latin Kings member Luis Rivera made two trips from Miami to Tallahassee in the weeks before the murder.

On July 18, 2014, Garcia and Rivera tracked Markel’s movements across the city. When Markel arrived at his home shortly after 11:00 a.m., Garcia approached the vehicle and shot him twice in the head. Surveillance footage captured the killers fleeing the scene in a rented Toyota Prius.

Phone records, toll data, ATM surveillance, and security cameras placed Garcia and Rivera in Tallahassee at the time of the crime. A later search revealed that Garcia had called Magbanua immediately after the murder to confirm that the job was done.

Arrest, Trial, and Conviction

Garcia was arrested in May 2016. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He pleaded not guilty and maintained his innocence, claiming that Rivera alone carried out the killing. Rivera, however, took a plea deal in exchange for testimony, directly implicating Garcia as the gunman.

During the joint trial in 2019 with Magbanua, Rivera told jurors that Garcia pulled the trigger while he waited in the car. Rivera said the murder was orchestrated because “the lady wants her two kids back,” referring to the custody battle between Wendi Adelson and Markel. The jury found Garcia guilty of both first-degree murder and conspiracy.

On October 15, 2019, Garcia was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murder, along with an additional 30 years for conspiracy. He showed little emotion as the sentence was read.

Where Sigfredo Garcia Is Now

Sigfredo Garcia is currently serving his life sentence in a Florida state prison. He has exhausted most post-trial motions and does not appear to be pursuing active appeals. He remains unrepentant and continues to deny full responsibility for the crime.

There has been no confirmed cooperation from Garcia with prosecutors in later trials. Unlike Rivera and Magbanua, who provided testimony against others in exchange for reduced or mitigated outcomes, Garcia stayed silent, making him the only participant in the plot who did not seek a deal or attempt to shift blame during sentencing.

Legacy in the Dan Markel Case

Garcia is widely recognized as the triggerman in one of Florida’s most infamous murder-for-hire cases. His role was essential in carrying out the plot, but his involvement also helped connect the dots between the hitmen, Magbanua, and ultimately the Adelson family.

His conviction was the first to bring accountability in the case, opening the door to later arrests and trials. It also validated years of investigative work that spanned multiple jurisdictions and involved intricate analysis of digital, financial, and surveillance evidence.

Today, Garcia remains incarcerated for his role in a killing that left two young boys without a father and reshaped the lives of everyone connected to the case. His story is a grim reminder of how loyalty, money, and criminal networks can converge with devastating results.
