Thomas Clayton was once a well-known figure in upstate New York, recognized for his athletic career as a former semi-professional hockey player. He played with the Elmira Jackals in the early 2000s and remained a local sports figure even after retiring from the rink. After hockey, Clayton transitioned into business, working as the operations manager for a SERVPRO franchise in Horseheads, New York, which specialized in disaster recovery services. He was married to Kelley Clayton, with whom he shared two young children, Charlie and Cullen.
To many in the community, Clayton appeared to have a successful life—a family, a stable job, and an active social circle. He regularly played poker with friends and was considered charismatic by some. However, beneath the surface, his marriage was strained. Friends of Kelley later testified that she had expressed concerns about the relationship. Those close to her noted signs of emotional abuse and control in the marriage, though no one suspected it would lead to violence.

The Murder-for-Hire Plot
In the early morning hours of September 29, 2015, Thomas Clayton called 911 to report that his wife had been killed. He claimed he discovered her body after returning from a poker game. His alibi seemed solid at first, backed by several friends who were with him that evening. However, police began to question inconsistencies in his story.
A breakthrough came when investigators learned Clayton had borrowed a phone during the poker game to make a call to Michael Beard, a former employee he had recently fired. Beard eventually confessed that Clayton offered him $10,000 to kill Kelley. Beard also led investigators to the murder weapon, bloody clothes, and the house keys—all disposed of near the crime scene. Although Beard later recanted his confession and gave conflicting accounts, prosecutors argued that Clayton’s motive was to escape his marriage and collect on life insurance.
Clayton’s 7-year-old daughter, Charlie, who had witnessed the attack, told investigators the masked assailant resembled her father. Though she didn’t say definitively that he committed the murder, her testimony, paired with digital evidence and witness accounts, helped build the case.
Conviction and Where He Is Now
Thomas Clayton was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder. His trial in 2017 lasted seven weeks. Prosecutors could not use Beard’s confession directly due to his changing testimony, but they relied heavily on circumstantial evidence including phone records, financial motives, and timeline reconstruction. After six hours of deliberation, the jury found Clayton guilty on all counts.
He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He is currently serving his sentence at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, New York, one of the state’s most well-known maximum-security prisons.
Clayton has maintained his innocence and declined to be interviewed for ABC’s 20/20 special What the Little Girl Saw. He has exhausted his appeals, and there has been no indication of any future legal recourse. His case continues to serve as a stark example of domestic betrayal and the devastating consequences of greed and manipulation.
