Life at Home Before the Tragedy
Christine and her husband had been together for nearly two decades and married for more than 10 years. They lived in a quiet, upscale neighborhood in Fairfax County and employed a live-in au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, to help care for their young daughter. By outward appearances, the household reflected the stability of a suburban family life.
Behind the scenes, however, the marriage had become complicated. In 2022, Brendan Banfield began an affair with Magalhães. Prosecutors later said that as the relationship deepened, he became determined to end his marriage without facing financial consequences or a custody dispute. Christine, according to evidence presented at trial, was unaware of the extent of the relationship and the danger developing inside her own home.
The Day of the Killing
On the morning of February 24, 2023, events inside the Banfield home turned deadly. Police were called after multiple 911 attempts were made by the au pair. When officers arrived, they found Christine suffering from multiple stab wounds inside an upstairs bedroom. A second victim, 39-year-old Joseph Ryan, was found dead from gunshot wounds in the same room.
Christine was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from her injuries. She had been stabbed multiple times in the neck during the attack. The couple’s young daughter was in the basement at the time and was not physically harmed.
Initially, Brendan Banfield told authorities that he had come home to find Ryan attacking his wife and that he shot the man in self-defense. However, investigators quickly found inconsistencies in that account, leading to a deeper investigation into what had actually occurred.
The Plot Behind the Crime
Prosecutors later revealed that Christine’s death was the result of a premeditated plan. According to evidence presented in court, Brendan Banfield and Juliana Peres Magalhães conspired to lure Joseph Ryan to the home using a fetish website, posing as Christine and arranging what Ryan believed would be a consensual encounter.
The plan was to frame Ryan for Christine’s murder by staging the scene as a violent assault gone wrong. Digital evidence, forensic analysis, and testimony from Magalhães indicated that the crime scene had been manipulated and that Christine had not arranged the meeting. Her father testified that Christine’s medical condition, which made her prone to bruising and bleeding, made it unlikely she would have participated in any violent sexual scenario, countering claims raised by the defense.
Justice and the Aftermath
After a lengthy investigation, Juliana Peres Magalhães was arrested in October 2023 and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of Joseph Ryan. In September 2024, Brendan Banfield was arrested and charged with multiple counts related to the killings.
In February 2026, following a three-week trial, a jury found Brendan Banfield guilty of two counts of aggravated murder, as well as child endangerment and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He faces mandatory life sentences without the possibility of parole, with sentencing scheduled for May 8, 2026. Magalhães awaits sentencing after agreeing to testify against him.
Following the verdict, Christine’s family issued a public statement thanking investigators, prosecutors, and jurors. They emphasized that the false narratives presented about her during the case added to their pain and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring she is remembered for who she was: a compassionate nurse, devoted mother, and loved daughter.
Remembering Christine Banfield
For those who knew her, Christine’s identity is defined not by the circumstances of her death but by the life she lived. She cared for vulnerable patients, supported her family, and maintained strong bonds with friends and coworkers. Her colleagues and loved ones stood by her family throughout the trial, offering support during years of legal proceedings and public scrutiny.
Christine’s family has expressed hope that the verdict brings some measure of peace and allows them to begin healing. They also extended sympathy to the family of Joseph Ryan, recognizing that both victims were innocent lives lost in a calculated act of violence. Through their statements and continued advocacy, they have worked to ensure that Christine is remembered for her compassion, integrity, and the lasting impact she had on those around her.
