Motherhood and Personal Life
Above all else, Joleen was a dedicated mother to three young children—two sons and a daughter. Friends described her as “obsessed” with her children in the most loving way, placing their happiness and safety above everything else. Her devotion to them was unwavering, and she worked hard to provide a stable life, balancing motherhood and her salon career.
Joleen had experienced challenges in her personal life. She had separated from her husband, Jason Cummings, in 2017, and was navigating the complexities of co-parenting and rebuilding her life. Despite hardships, her focus never wavered from her kids, and she remained hopeful about the future.
Her Disappearance
On May 12, 2018—Mother’s Day weekend—Joleen finished her shift at Tangles Hair Salon and was never seen again. When she failed to pick up her children the following day, alarm bells rang. Her mother, Anne Johnson, contacted law enforcement immediately. Joleen’s sudden absence was uncharacteristic and deeply troubling to those who knew her.
Her last known contact had been with a coworker, Jennifer Sybert, a new stylist who had recently joined the salon. Investigators discovered Joleen’s vehicle abandoned near a Home Depot, and soon surveillance footage placed Sybert at the scene. When authorities questioned her, she quit her job, refused further cooperation, and disappeared.
The Truth Revealed
It was soon revealed that Jennifer Sybert was an alias. The woman who worked alongside Joleen was actually Kimberly Kessler, a fugitive who had spent decades living under at least 17 false identities across 14 states. Kessler had a long history of deception, and investigators believe Joleen confronted her about her true identity, leading to a fatal confrontation.
Inside the salon, crime scene investigators discovered extensive blood evidence confirmed to be Joleen’s. Surveillance footage showed Kessler discarding heavy bags into a dumpster, and later purchasing cleaning supplies and an electric carving knife. Though Joleen’s body has never been found, the amount of forensic evidence pointed conclusively to murder.
The Trial and Legacy
Kimberly Kessler was arrested, charged, and in 2021 found guilty of the first-degree murder of Joleen Cummings. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Throughout her time in custody, Kessler displayed erratic behavior and attempted to be declared incompetent to stand trial, but the court determined she was fit.
Joleen’s death devastated her family, friends, and community. Her children were left without their mother, and those closest to her were forced to reckon with a loss that came suddenly and violently. Though justice was served, the absence of her remains continues to haunt loved ones.
Joleen Cummings is remembered not for the crime that ended her life, but for the joy she brought into others’ lives—through her laughter, compassion, and unwavering love for her children. Her story remains a heartbreaking reminder of the hidden dangers that can exist in everyday life and the strength of those left behind to fight for truth.
