Michael Lee King was the man convicted of kidnapping, sexually assaulting, and murdering 21-year-old Denise Amber Lee in North Port, Florida, on January 17, 2008. The crime shocked the nation because Denise managed to place a desperate 911 call while being held captive, yet communication failures prevented rescuers from reaching her in time.

Born on May 4, 1971, King worked as a plumber and lived in North Port, the same community as Denise and her family. At the time of the crime, he had been unemployed for several months and was facing foreclosure on his home. Court records indicated he had previously been married and divorced. During the penalty phase of his trial, family members testified about a childhood head injury and his intellectual limitations, but prosecutors argued that the evidence overwhelmingly showed a deliberate and premeditated crime.

The Crime

On January 17, 2008, King abducted Denise from her home while her two young children remained inside. Prosecutors later established that he transported her in his green Chevrolet Camaro, took her to his home, sexually assaulted her, and later drove her around the area while she remained captive.

During the ordeal, Denise managed to secretly use King’s cellphone to call 911. Her call became one of the most powerful pieces of evidence in the case. Investigators later connected the phone number to King, helping identify him as the suspect. Witnesses also reported hearing screams from his vehicle and seeing suspicious activity involving the Camaro.

King eventually shot Denise and buried her in a shallow grave. Her body was discovered two days later. Investigators found substantial forensic evidence linking him to the crime, including Denise’s hair and personal belongings in his vehicle and home.

Trial and Conviction

King’s trial began in August 2009 in Sarasota County, Florida. Prosecutors presented DNA evidence, witness testimony, physical evidence recovered from King’s property and vehicle, and recordings of Denise’s 911 call. The defense attempted to challenge the investigation and suggest alternative explanations for the evidence.

The jury deliberated for just over two hours before finding King guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and sexual battery. A week later, jurors unanimously recommended a death sentence by a 12-0 vote. The judge formally sentenced him to death for Denise’s murder.

Years on Death Row

Following his conviction, King spent more than sixteen years on Florida’s death row while pursuing numerous appeals through state and federal courts. His attorneys raised various challenges over the years, including arguments concerning his mental capacity and later claims about his religious rehabilitation while incarcerated. Those appeals were ultimately unsuccessful.

In February 2026, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed King’s death warrant, scheduling his execution for March 17, 2026. The Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to halt the execution.

Where Is Michael King Now?

Michael Lee King is deceased. He was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison on March 17, 2026, at age 54. He was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m. after the execution was carried out.

Members of Denise Amber Lee’s family, including her husband Nathan Lee and other relatives, witnessed the execution. Nearly eighteen years after Denise’s murder, the legal process came to an end.

Today, Michael King is remembered primarily for the crime that took Denise Amber Lee’s life. The case led to major reforms in emergency dispatch training and inspired the creation of the Denise Amber Lee Foundation, which continues to advocate for improvements to 911 systems across the United States. Denise’s legacy, rather than King’s, remains the lasting impact of the case.
